Generally
I am happily aware of the fact that my first assignment work was a good start for the course.
I realize that working more and putting the ideas on paper by drawing is the only way to develop them. It is better to start exploring my ideas visually than thinking or even writing about them extensively and then start drawing. by putting the initial idea down as a drawing a new process begins and as my tutor states in the report ”This should create new things that haven;t been ‘thought up’, but emerge from the relationship between you, the work and the materials.”
the fact that the course is designed to help students ”discover and build a way of working that is particular to you” (as mentioned by my tutor), meets my pursuit at this point of learning to express my artistic ideas. I am pleased that in this level 2 course I have the opportunity to select my subjects more freely.
Also, it is time that I am ready to move away from ”the safe point” and explore new things without hesitation and without worrying about any technical skill limitations as I have the opportunity to improve several drawing skills as they emerge through the several exercises and drawings that I will work throughout the course.
Parallel Project
I plan to work on the collage idea I worked for Assignment 1 for the Parallel Project and most possibly take an element of this work for the Critical Review.
I already have some ideas to experiment with, for example to include in the drawings portraits of my husband and children and maybe other family members as a way of discovering self identities in association to my own closed relationships. Another idea is to draw or collage pictures of my portraits of different/younger ages along with port portraits of the present as a way of exploring the continuation and coherence of the self identity.
Feedback on Exercises and Assignment
Demonstration of technical and visual skills, quality of outcome, demonstration of creativity
It is very positive for me to have affirmation that my charcoal work and my awareness of negative space is good as I am not very confident about my technical skills, as I can realize how much they can be improved in order to help me depict any ideas I have in a technically qualitative way. I don;t want my work to look clumsy and dabbling unless this is done on purpose for artistic / expressive reasons.
Using technology to assist my drawing experimentation is a new thing for me. Generally I was keen on using ”classic” or compromising ways of drawing as I am quite ”lazy”and quickly working and anxious to see immediate results. However I really enjoyed the process of ”playing” with different ways and combining elements to create an image that not unequivocal, mere traditional one medium drawing. I can see a whole new world of drawing after that experimentation.
I understand how I can be critical about my work and how I can incorporate or expand things that come out through the process of experimentation or accidentally. One drawing leads to the other, a couple of drawings may put together and create a new synthesis. elements can be excluded or reintegrated in a creative process that this is what art is after all.
Research
Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis
This part is one I should definitely pay attention. Studying other artists literally and visually is key point at expanding my own work. Also, the more I reflect on other artists work the more I will be better at reflecting on my own work and vise versa.
There is a great source of visual ideas that I can ”steal” and by analyzing and experimenting I could put my work at a higher level.
Learning Log
Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking , analysis
More detailed reflection, assessing and analysis of my own work. Reflect, criticize and analyse specific elements and ways of working. Explain the process and assess the results and reflect how things could be rectified for better outcomes and also how the work could go further.
